Boxing has officially lost the attention of the general population. Even with Canelo Alvarez's thunderous 3rd Rd KO of James Kirkland taken into consideration. Boxing purist, sports fanatics, and a select portion of the sports community seem to been the only viable target market going forward. Floyd Mayweather the sports biggest draw and most decorated champion is rapidly approaching retirement leaving the public w/o a villain to root against, and contenders w/o a viable box office champion to attempt to dethrone.
Wrestling fans are a niche audience, a larger % of the population than most would like to admit, but still in terms of #MayPac interest level... its a stretch. Although something close happend once upon a time. The "Attitude Era" (a boom period during the end of the millennium saw a trancendent increase in viewership and public awareness) of World Wrestling Entertainment has come and gone. While the brand is a publicly traded juggernaut with more reach now than ever before, the opportunity to create a spectacle that garners the intrigue of the casual individual like that of the 5/2/15 #MayPac prize fight in the near future may be a difficult task. All of which brings us to America's latest belittled to beloved source of entertainment UFC. The biggest names in the company's history are now older than you'd like a spokesperson of the brand to be. The most dominant fighters on the current roster aren't recognizable enough to the general public yet, and Dana White's biggest draw/most dominant champion (& low key best chance to create a trancendent villain) Jon "Bones" Jones may never fight in the Octagon again after recent legal problems stemming from recreational drug usage. If UFC is going to become the legit number 2/3 sport in America a trip to central casting to produce a box office villain that people will pay to see (and subsequently pay to see beaten) isn't recommended, it's imperative.
